On the 11th International Day of Yoga, veteran actor Dharmendra shared his thoughts on the importance of yoga, highlighting its strong foundation in Indian culture and the positive impact it has had on his life. In a conversation with ANI, he emphasized yoga’s role as a key element in both individual health and global wellness.
Dharmendra opens up on his youthful spirit; says, “Many people call me old, but I am still young”
The actor acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting yoga on a global scale, along with yoga guru Ramdev, who significantly contributed to its worldwide popularity. Dharmendra remarked, “I think Modi ji started it, and before that, Ramdev ji also began this movement. Many people from other countries wanted to patent it, but it didn’t happen. This is our civilisation, our culture, which has been going on for centuries. And it is necessary.”
The actor stressed that yoga is more than just physical exercise—it’s a powerful solution for numerous health problems. He stated, “Yoga can cure many diseases. If you have breathing problems, remember that health is wealth,” highlighting yoga’s importance for both physical and mental well-being.
Now in his 80s, Dharmendra expressed his enduring passion for life and his career, undeterred by age. With a smile, he remarked, “Many people call me old, but I am still young.”
Known for his on-screen image of strength and vitality, the actor revealed that maintaining fitness and health has always been a lifelong commitment for him.
The actor shared, “I used to dream of working hard and cycling. I would see my reflection in film posters and ask myself, ‘What am I going to achieve?’ I used to wake up at night and dream, and when I woke up in the morning, I would ask the mirror.”
Dharmendra also highlighted that sustaining a balanced mind and body has been key to his long-standing career in the challenging world of cinema.
Meanwhile, this year’s International Yoga Day celebrations featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading a mass yoga session along the picturesque Visakhapatnam coastline.
Over 300,000 people participated in the event alongside Prime Minister Modi, echoing this year’s theme—Yoga for One Earth, One Health.
In his address, PM Modi described yoga as a timeless gift that transcends age and unites people across borders. He emphasized that yoga is for everyone—irrespective of age, background, or physical ability—and commended its role in promoting global health and harmony.
The United Nations officially declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following India’s proposal at the UN General Assembly.
