Eight years after Corey Lewandowski was dismissed as Donald Trump’s campaign manager, he has been rehired as a “senior adviser” for the upcoming presidential campaign. Lewandowski is a controversial political operative known for his aggressive tactics and a series of public controversies, Lewandowski returns to a campaign that is facing challenges in the lead-up to the election.
Lewandowski’s reappointment comes amid concerns within Trump’s camp about lagging fundraising and polling in crucial swing states. He joins a team of former Trump aides, including Tim Murtaugh, Alex Pfeiffer, and Alex Bruesewitz, to bolster the campaign’s senior leadership team.
Trump’s campaign managers, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, said that these additions aim to strengthen the campaign’s leadership as the election approaches. “As we head into the home stretch of this election, we are continuing to add to our impressive campaign team,” Wiles and LaCivita said. “Corey Lewandowski, Taylor Budowich, Alex Pfeiffer, Alex Bruesewitz, and Tim Murtaugh are all veterans of prior Trump campaigns and their unmatched experience will help President Trump prosecute the case against Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, the most radical ticket in American history.”
Lewandowski’s past includes a series of controversies, including mocking a 10-year-old migrant child with Down syndrome on television in 2018, for which he remarked, “Womp, womp.” In 2021, he faced criminal charges for allegedly sexually harassing Trashelle Odom, the wife of a prominent GOP donor, during a charity event in Las Vegas. Odom accused Lewandowski of making unwanted sexual advances, including touching her inappropriately and making lewd remarks. He avoided jail time by agreeing to “impulse control training” as part of a plea deal.
At the time, a spokesperson for Trump stated, “He will no longer be associated with Trump World.” However, Lewandowski’s mantra, “Let Trump be Trump,” which he formulated during Trump’s 2016 campaign, continues to resonate with the former president.
Despite the controversies, Trump has maintained loyalty to Lewandowski, who played a role in the 2024 Republican National Convention and consulted for the Republican National Committee. The campaign is now focusing on recovering its footing against Vice President Kamala Harris, following President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race.
Trump addressed the staffing changes during a press conference at his Bedminster resort, expressing his satisfaction with the campaign’s leadership. “Susie is fantastic, as you know. And Chris is fantastic. They are leading it,” he said. Regarding Lewandowski’s role, Trump stated he would be a “personal envoy or he’ll be at some level.”
As Trump’s campaign faces new challenges, the decision to rehire Lewandowski is seen by some as a gamble, considering his previous controversial actions.
