Actress and singer, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, has found herself in the headlines, but this time, it’s for an unexpected reason. After making some sharp remarks about Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the disastrous Ahmedabad Air India crash on June 12, 2025, she received backlash from netizens. For the unversed, the Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa actress publicly questioned Ramesh’s survival story, claiming that his story of surviving the crash was a lie.
Though Suchitra later deleted the post and apologised for her misinformation regarding the passenger 11A, the incident has once again dug up ghosts of her past controversies, especially her infamous fallout with Bollywood actress, Preity Zinta, whom she once blamed for the collapse of her marriage with renowned filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur.
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi blamed Preity Zinta for her broken marriage with Shekhar Kapur
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi tied the knot with film director, Shekhar Kapur, in 1997, and it was considered an unconventional marriage, given their 30-year age gap. Suchitra was only 22 years old when she married the 52-year-old filmmaker. In an old interview with Siddharth Kannan, Suchitra candidly admitted that she had been fascinated by Shekhar since she was just 10 or 12 years old. The couple later welcomed their daughter, Kaveri Kapur.
While things were going quite smoothly, the marriage started falling apart after 12 years, ultimately ending in an ugly divorce in 2007. However, what made their divorce grab national attention was Suchitra’s shocking claim that Preity Zinta was the one responsible for their broken marriage.
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Suchitra shockingly stated that her marriage ended because of Preity Zinta. The enmity between the two actresses reportedly traces back to early 2007 when Preity Zinta gave her first-ever interview to Shekhar Kapoor, who later recommended her name to Mani Ratnam for her Bollywood debut in Dil Se. However, Suchitra believed that their bond was beyond mere friendship.
According to Suchitra, Preity’s bond with Shekhar was what played a central role in upsetting her marriage. Preity, on the other hand, strongly denied these allegations and dismissed them by suggesting that Suchitra was mentally unstable. In an interview, Preity had strongly refuted the claims and said:
“I am the number one actress, and you don’t even work; you are a homemaker. Suchitra, don’t talk to me like that. You need to see a psychiatrist because your mind is not in the right place.”
Suchitra, however, stood her ground, confidently retorting that she was proud to be a homemaker and had no desire to forgive or forget what she claimed happened.
Shekhar Kapoor’s troubled personal life
Before marrying Suchitra, Shekhar Kapur’s love life was already a topic of public discussion. He was once in a serious relationship with actress Shabana Azmi, and he later married Medha Gujral, niece of ex-Prime Minister I.K. Gujral. However, both of those relationships ended in separation.
When he married Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, it was no fairy tale either. In multiple interviews, the actress revealed that she faced significant emotional strain during their marriage, repeatedly claiming that Shekhar was disrespectful and unfaithful towards her. She even admitted that during her pregnancy, she planned to leave him and pursue her dreams at Berklee College of Music, but stayed on because of her then-unborn child, Kaveri.
Responding to Suchitra’s allegations of infidelity, the filmmaker stated that he could not live without romance. He said in an interview:
“I have had many relationships. I cannot Live Without Romance. However, I never had a relationship that didn’t have respect. So, the nature of the relationship changed. Though it didn’t have romance, sexual or the promise to live with each other, that relationship remained.”
While Suchitra openly named Preity in interviews, she also hinted at her in a blog post that caught media attention back then.
