Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi starrer Bhool Chuk Maaf is all set to release on Friday May 9. Directed by Karan Sharma, the movie is a comedy revolving around time loop. In an interview with us, Rajkummar got talking about the film and his experience of shooting it.
Rajkummar Rao on the challenges faced in Bhool Chuk Maaf, “How differently can you react even in the same situation was a task”
What was it like returning to comedy?
Bhool Chuk Maaf was a very joyful process. I’ve been a big fan of the time loop genre and this is the first time that it’s coming to Hindi cinema. Karan Sharma our director/writer had lived with this story for a long time. It’s very detailed and it was a very fulfilling experience for me. It’s a beautiful story with lot of comedy and a beautiful message in the end.
Comedy is not an easy genre. How do you swing it time after time?
You are absolutely right; comedy is not an easy genre. It is a very tough genre. But I love it. I think I somewhere exploded during Bareilly Ki Barfi, where for the first time people saw me doing comedy. And I really enjoyed the process.
Yes, but it isn’t only about you getting it right
I think it depends a lot on the writing. The writing has to be there. The situations have to be there. Only then an actor can come and maybe take it to some other level. But without good writing in comedy, it might look very forced.
That way you have been lucky
Yes, I have been very lucky that I have been a part of some really well written scripts, which are funny, which are genuinely funny. But I think, yeah, once you have everything in your favor, the writing, the right script, the right co-actors, and you are having fun on set, which is, I think, very important to really enjoy what you are doing, especially in a comedy film, because that really translates on screen.
How different was this comedy?
Well, as I said, this is a very new genre for Hindi cinema. And as I said, I have been a big fan of this time loop theme. It’s a lot of fun exploring this because, of course, you are reliving the same day again and again. But how differently you can react, even in the same situation, was a task. And my director Karan, I think, was very much in charge. He exactly knew, you know, how Ranjan, my character, would react in different situations, maybe on different days. So, I think that really helped because the writing was brilliant. I really enjoyed what I read. And that made my life very easy. But this one was certainly different.
You shot for Bhool Chuk Maaf in the holy city of Varanasi
Shooting it in Varanasi was an amazing experience. I personally also love being in Varanasi. Just sitting by ghats, you know, sitting in front of Ma Ganga. It’s very peaceful. And the way Sudeep, our DOP, Sudeep Chatterjee, has shot Banaras, he has made it look so serene, so beautiful, so colourful.
How do you view the past few years of your career?
The past couple of years have been hectic. But no complaints. As long as, you know, I’m getting to play different characters and challenging roles, I don’t mind.
How do you manage to be so prolific and yet so consistently good?
I try. I always think that, you know, I’m going to maybe do two films a year. But then I get these really good scripts and I get really greedy. I’m a very greedy, I’m a very hungry actor. So, whenever I read something nice and a good maker is attached with it, it’s very tough for me to say no. But as long as I’m not just being repetitive in all my films and doing the same kinds of stories, films every time, so I’m fine.
Your next?
The next one will be Maalik, which is my, in a way, debut in the raw action genre. So, looking forward to that. I want to see how people would react to that.
