NEW DELHI: India has secured the 80th position in the latest edition of the Henley Passport Index, allowing its citizens visa-free access to 62 countries. This includes popular destinations such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
India’s position is a slight improvement from the previous year when it was ranked 84.
Among India’s neighbors, the Maldives leads the pack positioned at 58, followed by China at 62, Bhutan at 87, Myanmar at 92, Sri Lanka at 96, Bangladesh at 97, and Nepal at 98th.Pakistan trails behind at 101.
Globally, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Singapore have the most powerful passports, offering their citizens visa-free access to 194 out of 227 destinations. South Korea, Finland, and Sweden closely follow, enabling visa-free travel to 193 destinations. Meanwhile, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands secure the third position with access to 192 destinations. The United Kingdom has risen to fourth place, and the United States holds steady at seventh.
Meanwhile, UAE at 11th position is a remarkable progress as it ascended 44 positions in the rankings.
Ukraine and China have also made substantial progress in their rankings. Conversely, Russia’s position has remained relatively unchanged since 2017.
The Henley Passport Index, a well-known ranking system, assesses a country’s passport power based on the number of visa-free destinations available to its citizens.
While Indian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to over 60 destinations, the overall passport power is restricted due to the high visa requirements imposed by numerous countries. Indian citizens still require visas for entry into 177 destinations, including prominent economies like the United States, the European Union, Russia, Japan, and China. This high visa dependency has a direct impact on the Indian passport’s mobility score.
Below is a list of the top 10 powerful passports as per The 2024 Henley Passport Index:
