The tragic crash of Air India’s AI171 has left hundreds of families in pain. The afternoon of June 12, 2025, cast the entire country in the dark shadows of grief and heartbreak after the ill-fated flight took away the lives of 241 onboard people, which included 219 passengers and 12 crew members. The aircraft crashed on the roof of a medical college hostel, resulting in several other deaths. While the country has united in mourning the loss of those who lost their lives, the casualties have crossed over 265 victims, making the tragedy even more sorrowful. Amid that, another story of a victim has surfaced online, which has us in tears.
Raxa Modha came to India to fulfil her husband’s last wish and lost her life in the tragedy
Raxa Modha had come to India with her daughter-in-law, Yasha Kamdar, and her two-year-old grandson, Rudra. The 55-year-old was visiting the country from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. She and her two-year-old grandson were on the ill-fated flight and lost their lives as they were flying back to England for the cremation and memorial service for Raxa’s late husband, Kishor.
The grieving widow had been in India for some time now, as her husband, Kishor, wanted to spend his last days in India. She stood by her husband till he passed away in April 2025 and was returning to the UK to organise a prayer meet later in June 2025. However, destiny had some other plans for her, and she perished in the crash of Air India AI171.
Raxa Modha and Kishor ran an Indian food catering firm in the UK called, Pooja Caterers. The couple had three children and one grandchild. According to some reports, Raxa’s son, Kishan, was supposed to return home on a different flight, which saved him from the unfortunate incident. However, in a matter of less than three months, he lost his father, mother and two-year-old son.
What happened to the Air India flight on June 12, 2025?
According to aviation experts, Air India AI171 was in the air for 32 seconds before the pilots lost control and the flight began to descend. Witnesses have also reported seeing the aircraft struggling to gain altitude. The incident took place at around 1:30 pm on June 12, 2025, less than a minute after the flight had taken off from Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to Gatwick Airport in London. However, the flight lost control descending from a height of 625 feet. The pilot sent a May Day call. However, it was too late, and before the station could respond, the flight had already collapsed on the roof of a medical college hostel. Former CM of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani also lost his life in the tragic crash. Out of 242 people on board only one person survived the tragic crash. He was seated at 11 A and was able to escape the scene before the plane exploded. The authorities are still combing through the details to find out what caused such a massive accident.
