NEW DELHI: Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan got angry at a party meeting in Chennai after a group of men gifted him a sword on stage, prompting a brief moment of chaos and police intervention.A video of the incident shows Haasan initially accepting the sword with a smile amid a crowd of men trying to pose with him. As the situation became increasingly chaotic, Haasan’s expression turned stern, and he was seen gesturing angrily at one man, ordering him to put the sword down.A police officer stepped in, attempting to take control of the weapon. Eventually, the officer managed to place it down. Despite Haasan’s clear displeasure, the man shook hands with him and struck a pose before being escorted off the stage by security personnel.Controversy over Kannada remark intensifiesMeanwhile, Kamal Haasan is facing a political storm in neighbouring Karnataka. On Friday, the Karnataka high court observed that he has not issued an apology for his controversial remarks on the Kannada language and directed the producer of his latest film Thug Life to respond to a plea filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat. The Parishat, which sought to intervene in the film producer’s case against a statewide release ban, argued that Haasan’s statements hurt Kannada linguistic and cultural sentiments. The controversy dates back to the audio release of Thug Life, where Haasan claimed that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, a remark that triggered backlash across Karnataka.Multiple political leaders and the Karnataka Film Chamber had demanded an apology from the actor, but Haasan refused and ultimately withheld the film’s release in the state on June 5, when it premiered globally.
