Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away on the unfortunate date of June 12, 2025. The 53-year-old businessman suffered a heart attack during a polo match in India. The news surfaced late in the night, leaving everyone in shock. As per a family source, there might be a delay in Sunjay’s funeral as he had US citizenship.

As per a report in NDTV, Sunay Kapur’s funeral might be delayed due to his citizenship. A source close to the family revealed the same. According to insiders, Sunjay Kapur holds US citizenship, and since he passed away in London, The legal process of bringing his body to India might be complicated. As per Sunjay Kapur’s father, Ashok Sachdev the last rites would be performed in Delhi. He said:
“The postmortem is currently underway. Once the paperwork is complete, the body will be brought to India for the last rites.”

For the unversed, the 53-year-old businessman is survived by his third wife, Priya Sachdev and their son, Azarias. He is also the father of a daughter, Samaira, and a son, Kiaan, from his second wife, Karisma Kapoor. He was also married to Nandita Mahtani, who was his first wife, and they were together in the early years of 2000s.
Sunjay Kapur’s cause of death
According to close sources, Sunjay Kapur was playing polo at the Guards Polo Club when he felt it difficult to breathe and was suffocated mid-game. He requested to stop the game and then left the ground. Soon, he suffered a heart attack and died. An insider also revealed that Sunjay Kapur reportedly swallowed a bee, and it could be that the bee sting in his throat, which caused a heart attack. It is worth noting that Sunay Kapur had a polo team called Aureus, in which he served as a patron. The businessman was playing against Sujan, a team led by a hotelier named Jaisal Singh.
Karisma Kapoor and Sanjay Kapur’s story, which ended in an ugly divorce
For those who don’t know, Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with Delhi-based businessman, Sunjay Kapur in 2003. It all happened after her broken engagement with Abhishek Bachchan. They also have two children together. However, after ten years of togetherness, Karisma ended her marriage. It resulted in an ugly divorce battle and a lot of blame games. As a result, the couple was granted divorce in 2016.
It was reported that Karisma tied the knot with Sanjay after the continuous insistence of her mother, Babita Kapoor. On the other hand, her father, Randhir Kapoor, was always against the union. In a media interaction, Randhir had called Sanjay ‘a third class man’. After the divorce, Karisma got custody of her kids. Despite this, the ex-couple continued co-parenting their children. In fact, there have been many occasions when Karisma and Sunjay were spotted together. They attended their children’s birthday dinners together.
