In a tragic incident, a flight bound for London from Ahmedabad crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of over 200 people, including students from BJ Medical College, as the aircraft collided with their hostel mess. The heartbreaking event has left the entire nation in shock and mourning. There were 242 people on board, including passengers and crew. Notably, the first officer piloting the flight, Clive Kunder, was a family friend of actor Vikrant Massey.

After the tragic crash in Ahmedabad, actor Vikrant Massey turned to social media to share his sorrow and mourn the loss of lives. He disclosed that his family friend, who was the first officer on the flight, was among those who tragically lost their lives.
Vikrant Massey wrote in his Instagram stories, “My heart breaks for the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the unimaginably tragic crash in Ahmedabad today. It pains me even more to know that my uncle, Clifford Kunder, lost his son, Clive Kunder, who was the first officer operating that fateful flight. May God give strength to you and your family, uncle, and to all who are deeply affected.”
On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the crash of Air India Flight AI171 a “national tragedy that has plunged the entire country into mourning.” He expressed deep sorrow over the tremendous loss of life and assured the victims’ families that the government would offer steadfast support throughout this difficult time.
Amit Shah visited the Civil Hospital in Asarwa, Ahmedabad, to meet the sole survivor, the families of the victims, and to evaluate the medical response efforts.
Sharing an update on the casualties, he stated, “The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers, including both Indian nationals and foreign citizens, along with 12 crew members. Amidst this tragedy, I have received some hopeful news — one passenger has survived. I have personally met him.”
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Amit Shah expressed his deep sorrow, “Pained beyond words by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Disaster response forces were swiftly mobilised. I have spoken with Gujarat CM Shri Bhupendra Patel, State Home Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi, and the Police Commissioner to take full stock of the situation.”
He also highlighted the magnitude of the disaster, revealing that DNA identification is underway to officially confirm the identities of the deceased. He added, “Only after the DNA process is completed will we be able to release the names.”
The minister also emphasized the catastrophic nature of the crash, explaining that the fire ignited with such intensity after the plane went down that “there was no opportunity to save anything.” The wreckage was rapidly consumed by the blaze, making immediate rescue efforts incredibly challenging.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, headed to London Gatwick, crashed just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, colliding with a doctors’ hostel near a medical college. The impact caused a massive explosion, leading to the deaths of over 200 people, including passengers, crew members, and individuals on the ground. Authorities are ongoing with recovery and identification efforts.
