Former US President Donald Trump holds a 4-point lead over President Joe Biden among registered voters, according to a recent Pew Research Centre poll. The survey, which included more than 7,000 participants, also revealed that less than a quarter of Americans perceive Biden as “mentally sharp.”
In a direct matchup, Trump maintains a slight advantage over Biden, with 50% support compared to Biden’s 47%.This represents a slight improvement for Trump since April when he led by a margin of 49% to 48%.
The poll highlighted a significant disparity in perceptions of mental acuity between the two candidates. While 58% of voters described Trump as “mentally sharp,” only 24% held the same view of Biden. This marks a notable decline for the president, who enjoyed a 54% rating on this attribute in March 2021.
Conducted between July 1-7, following Biden’s lacklustre performance in the June 27 debate against Trump, the poll comes amidst growing concerns among Democrats about the president’s mental fitness and his ability to secure a second term in November.
These apprehensions were further amplified by Biden’s recent gaffe at the Nato summit, where he mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.”
Despite Trump’s lead in the poll, Biden fared better in terms of perceived honesty, with 48% of voters finding him honest compared to 36% for Trump.
However, a larger proportion of voters (64%) considered Trump to be “mean-spirited,” while only 31% held the same view of Biden. Interestingly, both candidates were equally seen as “embarrassing” by 63% of the registered voters surveyed.
