Anurag Kashyap on film criticism: “Audience doesn’t trust anything”

Anurag Kashyap agreed with the observation, stating, “Audience doesn’t trust anything. It’s true!” He further emphasized that the growing cynicism extends beyond just viewers. According to him, even filmmakers are gradually losing confidence in the critical ecosystem they once valued. “I remember a time when we got great reviews for our movies from critics that we looked up to for validation. It gave us personal joy. Now, it doesn’t matter. Gine chune 4-5 reviewer hain jinko respect karte hain (There are 4-5 critics who command respect),” he shared.

Anurag Kashyap’s growing disillusionment with the film industry has led to a significant change. He recently confirmed moving out of Mumbai. In a recent interview, he shared, “I’ve left Mumbai,” adding with a smile that he had just paid the first rent on his new home. While he didn’t disclose the exact location, it’s speculated to be Bangalore. Explaining his decision, he said, “I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs. 500 and Rs. 800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”

Meanwhile, Stolen, featuring Abhishek Banerjee in the lead role, has garnered positive reviews from critics and is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
