SHILLONG: Sonam Raghuvanshi and four other suspects in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi were brought to Shillong in two batches – Sonam on Tuesday night, the others Wednesday morning. They were produced before the first-class judicial magistrate under tight security. Crowds gathered outside the courthouse, demanding harsh punishment. Sonam underwent a medical exam to determine pregnancy. Initial tests came back negative. A follow-up test is scheduled in 24 hours. Medical tests on the other four were conducted at Sadar police station in Shillong.Sonam, 24, and her husband Raja, 28, had vanished on May 23 near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills. A search followed and on June 2, Raja’s body was found at the bottom of a gorge near the falls. Sonam remained missing till she surfaced at a highway dhaba in eastern UP’s Ghazipur on June 9.East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said Meghalaya police’s SIT will begin interrogation and cross-check statements against CCTV footage, call data, and other evidence. “Once the examination and statements are complete, SIT will fix a date to reconstruct the crime scene,” Syiem said.Public demonstrations and silent marches were held in Shillong and Cherrapunji. Members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, joined by residents, condemned the killing. HYC president Roykupar Synrem said Meghalaya is known for its peace and hospitality. “This is a tragic case, but it must not define our state,” he said, calling for quick implementation of the inner-line permit system to improve visitor monitoring.
