Two Naxalites, including a woman, were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in the Sukma district of Chattisgarh on Wednesday. The exchange of fire broke out in the afternoon near Pusguna village under the jurisdiction of Kukanar police station. The operation was launched earlier in the day by personnel from the District Reserve Guard and Kukanar Police, based on intelligence inputs about Naxal movement in the area, said Sukma superintendent of police, Kiran Chavan.Since 2 pm, multiple rounds of gunfires were exchanged between naxalites and the security personnel. Once the fighting halted, two bodies were recovered, along with an INSAS rifle, a 12-bore rifle, other arms, ammunition and explosive materials.Preliminary identification revealed that one of the deceased was Baman, a local organisation squad commander from Pedaras village, who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. The identity of the woman Naxalite is yet to be confirmed.Wednesday’s encounter comes just two days after a tragic incident in the same district, where additional superintendent of Police (Konta Division), Akash Rao Girepunje, was killed in an IED blast triggered by Naxalites.
