Actor Aamir Khan is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, and while the buzz around the film has been building steadily, one topic that has caught public attention is the 23-year age difference between Aamir and his co-star Genelia Deshmukh.

In a recent conversation with the Indian Express, Aamir addressed the discussion surrounding their on-screen pairing and whether the significant age gap was a concern. The actor responded with his trademark candour and humour.

“Ya, I know. But that was a long time ago,” Aamir said, referring to Genelia’s iconic role opposite his nephew, Imran Khan, in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008). “And ab Imran bhi kafi meri age ka ho gaya hai,” he joked, lightening the mood.

For context, 17 years ago, Genelia played the bubbly and beloved college sweetheart of Imran Khan in his debut film. Fast forward to now, she’s all set to portray Aamir Khan’s wife in Sitaare Zameen Par. While Aamir is currently 60 and Genelia 37, the actor clarified that their characters in the film are both meant to be in their early 40s—an age bracket that, he says, can now be portrayed more convincingly thanks to modern technology.

“I’m 60, but in today’s day and age, we have the advantage of VFX,” Aamir explained. “Earlier, if I played an 18-year-old, I had to rely on prosthetics. Now we have more tools.” Aamir, often dubbed Bollywood’s “Mr. Perfectionist,” concluded by stating that age no longer restricts actors from taking on challenging or unconventional roles. “So, age is not a barrier for actors anymore,” he asserted.

Speaking of the film, directed by RS Prasanna, it is scheduled to release on June 20.
