A fourth victim has died following the shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, which left a total of 14 people injured, including nine civilians and two law enforcement officers.
The incident took place around 11.30 am on Friday, leaving the community in shock as bystanders scrambled for safety. The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, has been charged with four counts of capital murder.Police have yet to disclose a motive for the shooting, reported AP.
The deceased victims have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81. All were civilians. The wounded, ranging in age from 20 to 65, include four people still hospitalized, one of whom is in critical condition. Two police officers were also injured: Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, who has since been released from the hospital, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries were minor.
The suspect Posey was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement. “He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement,” police said. Following treatment, Posey was turned over to police custody and taken to the Ouachita County Detention Center.
A media briefing concerning the shooting has been scheduled for 2 pm Sunday. As of Friday, a state police spokesperson could not confirm if Posey had an attorney. The Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his detention but had no information regarding his legal status.
The tragedy unfolded at the Mad Butcher grocery store, located in Fordyce, a city of approximately 3,200 residents, situated 65 miles south of Little Rock. Videos posted on social media depicted at least one person lying in the parking lot, accompanied by the sound of multiple gunshots.
Roderick Rogers, a member of the city council, addressed the incident. “People were just jumping into cars to get to safety,” he said. Rogers had been informed of the shooting by employees at his nearby restaurant. Upon arrival at the scene, he witnessed people running in every direction seeking cover, with one individual even making a dash for the local hospital.
Images captured by reporters at the scene exhibited a plethora of bullet holes in the store’s windows, spent shell casings scattered across the parking lot, and local and state agencies responding with at least one medical helicopter landing nearby.
This incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings at grocery stores. In 2022, a white supremacist killed ten Black individuals at a Buffalo supermarket. This attack followed a similar event in Boulder, Colorado, in 2021, where ten people were fatally shot in a supermarket.
