Ryan Lochte and his wife, Kayla Reid, have thrown in the towel on their seven-year marriage.
The real estate agent took to Instagram on Wednesday to share that she and the 12-time Olympic medalist parted ways earlier this year.
“I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection,” she wrote in a lengthy statement.
“I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life,” Reid, 33, continued, explaining she’s taken time to address the split so it could come “from a place of healing — not from fresh, open wounds.”
“Sometimes we face trials we didn’t choose or see coming. And in those moments, we’re forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future.
“I’ve come to the understanding that staying isn’t always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love — for those around me and for myself.”
Reid concluded that she was choosing to give herself “grace,” and choose “resilience” as she moves “in uncharted territory.”
“I’m choosing to believe that what lies ahead will bring strength and peace,” she said.
Reid filed for divorce on March 26, according to court documents obtained by Page Six.
Later on Wednesday, Lochte acknowledged Reid’s statement with his own, writing on Instagram that he is “deeply grateful for the life we’ve built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.”
“Although this decision hasn’t been easy, I believe it’s the right step toward peace and well-being for us both. I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately,” he added, thanking friends and family for their support.
The exes got engaged in October 2016, a few months after the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
They tied the knot in 2018 during a private ceremony at their home in Florida before hosting a larger gathering in Palm Springs, Calif., that September.
The athlete and Reid share an 8-year-old son, Caiden Zane, and two daughters, Live Rae, 5, and Georgia June, 1.
Lochte’s latest setback comes after he recovered from breaking his leg in a 2023 car accident.
In August 2024, he shared a video of himself walking with the assistance of a walker and in a wheelchair after breaking his femur.
Late last year, he recalled “sinking back into depression” after the accident “nearly took everything” from him.
At the time, Lochte thanked Reid and his kids for helping him “rise from that darkness.”
