    India got elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) for the term 2026-28, informed external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar on Wednesday.Taking to social media platform X, the foreign minister expressed India’s commitment to championing development issues. He wrote: “India was elected to the Economic and Social Council for the term 2026-28 at at UN today. Thank member states for their overwhelming support and reposing their trust in us. Appreciate the efforts of the permanent mission of India to the United Nations. India remains committed to championing development issues and keep working to strengthen the Ecosoc.”Other countries elected to the organ include Australia, Burundi, Chad, China, Ecuador, Finland, Lebanon, Mozambique, Norway, Peru, Sierra Leone, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan. The terms of all new members will begin on 1 January 2026.Ecosoc is one of the six major organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the UN’s work on economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian issues. ECOSOC membership is distributed to ensure fair geographical representation across five regional groups: African States, Asia-Pacific States, Eastern European States, Latin American and Caribbean States, and Western European and other States.
