Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone and discussed several global issues, including the conflict between India and Pakistan, Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov said during a briefing.
“They also touched upon the Middle East and the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which was stopped with the personal participation of President Trump,” Ushakov said, as reported by Russian news agency TASS.
Tensions between India and Pakistan had sharply increased after the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians were killed. Pahalgam is a tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, India. India blamed Pakistan-based terrorists for the attack.
In response, on May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting precision strikes on locations across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), which hosts terrorist camps. Pakistan hit back with retaliatory strikes. Both countries announced a complete ceasefire on May 10.
Amid the worsening ties between the two nuclear-powered nations, the phone call between Putin and Trump also touched on this conflict, along with other major global matters.
TRUMP SHARES DETAILS OF THE CALL
After the call, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social and shared more details about the conversation. He said the two leaders talked about the Ukraine war, Iran’s nuclear program, and other global matters.
“I just finished speaking, by telephone, with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia. The call lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes. We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides. It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace,” Trump wrote.
He added, “President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields. We also discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran’s decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly! I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement. President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion. It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!”
RUSSIA HINTS AT MILITARY RESPONSE TO UKRAINE ATTACKS
On the same day, Russian officials said they are considering military action in response to recent drone attacks deep inside their territory, which they blamed on Ukraine. Moscow also accused Western countries of supporting these attacks.
