Like a bevy of other aught shoe trends — hello ballet flats, Uggs, rhinestone high heels and platform thong sandals — the wedge shoe has come full circle. But its revival has been given a 2025 update, like the one Dakota Johnson stepped out in on Friday while in New York City.

The “Madame Web” star wore an angular take on the wedge shoe, opting for Khaite‘s Colt Wedges — that retail for $990 — with a sculptural heel that slants inwards, and a tiny gold staple at the high seamless vamp that offers a slipper effect.

Johnson paired the black shoes with Commando’s black classic control bodysuit, a pair of vintage wash high-waisted straight leg jeans and Khaite’s buttery suede brown blazer from the brand’s resort 2026 collection. She accessorized with on a pair of metal frame oval sunglasses from Gucci and jewels from Ophelia Eve and Sophie Bille Brahe.

Johnson was styled by Kate Young, who has also worked with Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Jennifer Connelly, Hilary Swank, Salma Hayek, Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lawrence, Selena Gomez, Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson — and was named Best Stylist at the 2025 WWD Style Awards.

Wedge shoes have been trending recently, including at this month’s Cannes Film Festival, where Zoe Saldaña stepped out in a pair of elegant wedge shoes. For the occasion, the “Emilia Pérez” star wore a pair of strappy black sandals with a gold wedge heel from Saint Laurent.

While Cannes Film Festival made headlines this year with its newly ordained ban on dresses with long trains — and naked dressing and voluminous outfits that “hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted” — the industry tentpole also has a complicated history with shoes. In 2015, it was widely reported that a group of women were denied entry to the premiere of “Carol,” a period romance starring Cate Blanchett, because their shoes weren’t “tall enough.” However, there are no current rules mandating guests to wear heels.

Johnson is currently gearing up for the release of her new film “Materialists” with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, which is due in theaters on June 13.
