Paula Badosa’s Roland Garros campaign came to an end in the third round on Saturday as the 10th-seeded Spaniard fell 6-1, 7-5 to Australia’s Daria Kasatkina. Despite flashes of her trademark grit, Badosa struggled with physical discomfort throughout the contest and couldn’t overcome Kasatkina’s consistency and court craft.

Kasatkina, ranked 17th, took charge from the outset, breaking twice within the first 20 minutes to build a commanding 5-0 lead. Her depth and precision off the ground exposed Badosa’s movement, and the first set was wrapped up in just over half an hour. Badosa, who had shown resilience in tight wins over Naomi Osaka and Elena-Gabriela Ruse earlier in the tournament, appeared physically hampered and often looked to her box for support.

The second set saw a more aggressive Badosa emerge, particularly after a marathon eighth game in which she finally broke serve after seven missed chances. But just as the momentum seemed to tilt, a brief rain delay halted play. Kasatkina returned just as focused and broke Badosa at 5-6 to seal the win in 94 minutes, advancing to the Roland Garros Round of 16 for the fourth time.

Elsewhere, teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva continued her impressive run with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Yulia Putintseva. The 18-year-old sixth seed dictated play from the baseline and showed composure beyond her years to reach the second week in Paris for the second straight year. She will now face Kasatkina in a high-stakes fourth-round clash.

American third seed Jessica Pegula also booked her spot in the last 16 after a gritty 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over Marketa Vondrousova. The 31-year-old, aiming to better her 2022 quarter-final finish in Paris, will face either Lois Boisson or Elsa Jacquemot next.
