Mumtaz and Shammi Kapoor were among the most popular actors in the 1960s. Known for their energy and charism, the two stars used to create magic on-screen. Although they worked together in just two films, their strong on-screen chemistry and off-screen romance soon became the talk of the town. Shammi never opened up about their relationship, but Mumtaz has often revealed that they dated for a brief period but broke up when it came to marriage. However, in a recent interview, the veteran actress revealed how she and Shammi used to date in those times and how it was different from modern relationships.
Mumtaz reveals she didn’t used to spend the whole day or night with Shammi
Mumtaz recently sat down for an interview with Filmybeat and recalled the time when she was dating Shammi Kapoor. The actress revealed that unlike the couples today, they didn’t spend days and nights together due to her strict parents and busy film schedules. However, after completing her work on the set, she would often visit his home, look after arrangements and entertain his guests. Sharing the memories, she said:
“Hamare zamaaane mein aisa nahi tha ke pure din saath mein baithe rahe because I was also busy working and even with him. I would come home from work and entertain his guests. Dekh liya, khana vana ho gaya sab ho gaya.”
Mumtaz revealed that after meeting and spending time at his home, she used to quickly come back because her mother used to wait and scold her if she got late. The actress highlighted that she came from a strict household, and her mother used to even accompany her to shoot. In her words:
“Uss zamaane mein parents were very strict, and I come from a Muslim family; Iranians are very strict. I never went shooting alone. My mother was always with me. Toh aisa kabhi nahi hua ke poore poore din aur raat saath bitaye ho.”
Mumtaz reveals she chose her career over her relationship with Shammi Kapoor
In the same conversation, when asked about the reason for her breakup, the actress mentioned that she has often mentioned that she chose her career over marriage. She revealed that Shammi Kapoor’s father didn’t want his daughter-in-law to work after marriage. In contrast, she was ambitious for her future. So, she broke off her relationship. Mumtaz mentioned that even Shammi’s wife, Geeta Bali, had to leave her work after marriage, but she feels if anyone wants to cheat, it can happen anyway. However, she respected the views of Shammi’s father.
Mumtaz recalled her last meeting with Shammi Kapoor
In an old interview with Radio Nasha, Mumtaz opened up about her last meeting with Shammi. She revealed that she met the actor before his demise on his last birthday. His then-wife had invited her to the celebration at Shammi’s request and Mumtaz saw him sitting in a corner with a drink. Consequently, she questioned him about drinking despite his poor health. In turn, Shammi stated that he wouldn’t live for long, and she couldn’t say anything further to him.
