Suryakumar Yadav blames poor batting for SA loss, refuses to abandon aggressive style

India captain Suryakumar Yadav blamed his teamтАЩs poor batting following their crushing defeat against South Africa national cricket team in the Super 8 fixture of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday, 22 February, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Chasing a target of 188, India were bundled out for 111 in 18.5 overs as South Africa ended their 12-match winning streak in the T20 World Cup.

IndiaтАЩs chase got off to the worst possible start as Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a duck in the very first over, while Tilak Varma (1 off 2) and Abhishek Sharma (15 off 12) also fell cheaply, with the Men in Blue finishing the powerplay at 31 for 3. Following the defeat, Suryakumar acknowledged the batting lapses, admitting that the team failed to make a solid start in the powerplay.

T20 World Cup: IND vs SA Updates

тАЬWhen youтАЩre chasing 188, you canтАЩt win the game in the powerplay, but you can certainly lose it. We lost too many wickets during that phase and werenтАЩt able to build the small partnerships we needed while chasing 188. But thatтАЩs part of the game. WeтАЩll learn from it, take a step back, and come back stronger,тАЭ said Suryakumar Yadav at the post-match presentation.

Despite the crushing defeat, Suryakumar insisted that the team would continue with the same batting approach and backed his players to bounce back strongly.

тАЬHopefully, weтАЩll bat well, bowl well, and field well. WeтАЩll keep things simple, stick to the brand of cricket we want to play, and nothing changes. IтАЩm confident weтАЩll bounce back strongly,тАЭ he added.

How are India’s chances for semi final affected?

IndiaтАЩs batters never appeared settled at the crease and often seemed in a hurry to complete the run chase. Their aggressive brand of cricket backfired badly, as they struggled to rotate the strike and lost wickets while attempting big shots. As a result, IndiaтАЩs batting woes in the tournament continued, leaving them in a precarious position.

Their net run rate has been severely affected by the defeat and now stands at -3.800. India must win both of their remaining fixtures against Zimbabwe and West Indies to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
