Over the last few years, Prasanth Varma has been widely regarded as one of the younger directors attempting ambitious storytelling while building a structured cinematic universe in Telugu cinema. However, recent conversations around the filmmaker have shifted from scale and vision to reports of stalled projects, actors walking out, and alleged financial disagreements. The latest addition to that list is his reported collaboration with Prabhas, which now appears uncertain.
According to a Gulte report, Prabhas and Prasanth Varma were expected to collaborate on a mythological project tentatively titled Baka, with Prabhas reportedly set to play Bakasura. The film was said to be backed by Mythri Movie Makers, and a test shoot with the actor allegedly took place a few months ago.
However, the latest report suggests that Prabhas was not fully convinced after the shoot and is believed to have stepped away from the project. While there has been no official confirmation from either side, industry buzz indicates that the film may not move forward.
If confirmed, this would mark another setback for Prasanth Varma following similar reports around projects involving Ranveer Singh’s Brahma Rakshasa and Nandamuri Mokshagna’s debut. The Prabhas film was earlier speculated to go on floors before Kalki 2898 AD: Part II and Salaar Part II, adding to the surprise around the current development.
Prasanth Varma’s last release, Hanu-Man, hit theatres on January 12, 2024, and laid the foundation for the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). His next confirmed directorial is Jai Hanuman, a sequel centred on Lord Hanuman, starring Rishab Shetty and produced by Mythri Movie Makers’ Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar.
