Actor Mukul Dev passed away on Friday May 23. His departure triggered a bout of sadness in many in the industry. One among them is filmmaker Samir Karnik, who directed him in films like Yamla Pagla Deewana and Chaar Din Ki Chandni. The director got emotional remembering his friend in an interview with us.

(Sounding completely numbed) What can I say? I mean, I still don’t believe it that something happened to Mukul. I don’t believe it, yeah. I just don’t believe it. Such a dear friend, yaar. Uske ghar pe humne kitne khaana khaye hai. Hum paka paka ke khaate the.
The friendship grew when you made Yamla Pagla Deewana?
Yes, me, Bobby (Deol), him were the best of friends during the shooting of Yamla Pagla Deewana. And we had such a wonderful time, yaar.
It must be tough on you?
Such memories. He was such a great guy. Is a great guy. During the time when we were down and out, he always used to bring some humour to it, yaar. Off screen, on screen, he is the best guy that I can work with.
After Yamla Pagla Deewana you did Chaar Din Ki Chandni with Mukul Dev
Yes, then came Chaar Din Ki Chandni. What a guy! (He used to say) Yaar, Karnik, aisa kar lete hain, yaar. Karnik, aisa kar lete hain, yaar. He was such a sportsman. I mean, I can’t find the words (breaks down). He was the most wonderful human being I came across. And I actually, yaar, cried for his loss, yaar.
Missed opportunities?
We were going to do another film together, yaar. But what do I say, yaar. We keep postponing our plans until it is too late.
