It’s not a remake or a sequel; the latest film, Anaconda, is nothing like the one you have seen before. Unlike previous versions of the film, this time, director and co-writer Tom Gormican has added a comedic twist to the latest edition. The latest version, co-written by Kevin Etten, serves as a meta remake of the 1997 classic, Anaconda.
Anaconda plot
The film opens with a group of friends, unsatisfied with their lives, gathering to remake one of their favourite films, Anaconda. As they set out to the Amazon Rainforest, they accidentally kill a snake they meant to use in the film. So, the group of friends ventures into the forest to find a replica and is attacked by a real anaconda.
Anaconda director, Tom Gormican, reveals the surprise cameos
The film has capitalized on a few familiar faces, including Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez, who play themselves. Instead of reprising her character, Jennifer played an exaggerated version of herself in the meta remake. Talking about the same to Variety, Gormican said:
“We were always thinking that it would be fun to have the surviving members. So we just kept reaching out. I think they were happy to jump in and celebrate their own, you know, achievement. I think they were like, ‘Wait a second, that sounds like fun.’ They wanted to be part of it. So, I think it was an easy sell.”
Anaconda pokes fun at Hollywood
The film stars Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello. The meta version of the latest Anaconda film also satirizes Hollywood. In the same interview, Gormican revealed that the film has meta elements that poke fun at Hollywood itself, with the titular character, Rudd, playing a struggling actor and his group of friends arriving on the set where a crew is shooting a reboot of Anaconda. The group even jokes that Hollywood has no ‘new ideas’. The group of friends also met 1997 Anaconda’s star Ice Cube, who was also on the studio’s snake-destroyed set to reprise his role.
Tom Gormican reveals the set was destroyed in a cyclone
Gormican lost two final locations while filming in Australia. The first location was a factory that went on strike, and the second was a boatyard created by the crew, which was destroyed in a cyclone. However, the director reused the cyclone-destroyed set, deciding to end the film with what remained. Speaking about the same, Gormican said:
“We went in and made it look [purposefully] destroyed. And we just said it was a snake.”
