Former India all-rounder Yograj Singh has credited his son Yuvraj Singh for Shubman Gill’s success as he’s been recently appointed as the captain of Test team. Gill has become the 37th captain of the Indian Test team as he’s all set to take over the reins from Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from Tests.
Gill will be leading India in the upcoming tour of England as they begin their new cycle of the World Test Championship. Following Gill’s appointment as skipper, Yograj congratulated the India star and said that the credit for his performances goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh.
“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh. If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played an essential role in that,” Yograj told ANI.
Gill has trained under the supervision of his father from a young age and is touted as the next batting superstar of the country. He has also trained with Yuvraj Singh during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
He has played 32 Test matches so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties. He has the experience of leading on five occasions in first-class cricket and will be eager to bring his A game to the fore on his captaincy debut on the upcoming England tour set to begin from June 20.
He’s currently leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). GT are enjoying a successful season as they’re ranked at the top of the points table with 18 points from 13 matches.
The 25-year-old will be having Rishabh Pant as his deputy as the duo has been entrusted to usher the Indian Test team into a new era after the retirement of several senior players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin.
