Whose money is this? Pakistan speaker waves lost cash, 12 MPs raise hands

Whose money is this? A simple question by Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker on a bundle of notes found on the floor sparked a comedy of errors in Parliament recently. During the session on Monday, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq found 10 PKR 5,000 notes (around Rs 16,500) on the floor of the Assembly. The speaker decided to take an honesty test. However, little did he have the inkling of the humorous turn it would take.

“Whose money is this? Whoever it belongs to, please raise your hand,” the Speaker asked while waving the 10 PKR 5,000 notes in the air. What followed left him stunned as 12-13 MPs raised their hands almost within the blink of an eye, laying claim to the money.

Seeing the situation, the Speaker quipped, “There are 10 notes, yet 12 owners.” The light-hearted episode led to a brief halt in the proceedings. A video of the hilarious incident has gone viral on social media, with several Pakistanis mocking their own lawmakers.

According to Pakistan’s Aaj TV, the money later found its way to its rightful owner – Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, an MP of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He later collected it from the Assembly office.

As the video gained widespread traction on social media, Pakistanis had a field day roasting their lawmakers, while another section felt all 12 MPs who raised their hands should be held in contempt of Parliament and dismissed.
