NEW DELHI: Hours after an earthquake of 4.7 magnitude rattled New York City, aftershocks were reported on Friday afternoon, according to a Reuters witness.
Cautioning of the aftershocks, the New York Hochul said, “We are taking earthquake seriously because of possibility of aftershocks”.
Earlier, a quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, struck near Lebanon, New Jersey, about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia, as reported by US Geological Survey.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre had initially measured the quake at 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.
The tremors evoked memories of the August 23, 2011, earthquake that rattled millions from Georgia to Canada, registering a magnitude of 5.8, the most powerful quake to hit the East Coast since World War II, with its epicenter in Virginia.
