You should’ve targeted BJP more, Daddy: Kavitha writes to former chief minister

A handwritten letter, purportedly penned by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha to her father, former Telangana chief minister and BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), has stirred debate in political circles. The letter, written in a mix of Telugu and English, is described as feedback on the party’s Silver Jubilee meeting held in Warangal on April 27, outlining both praise and criticism of the event and the party’s direction.

In the letter, Kavitha wrote: “As you (KCR) spoke for just two minutes, some people began speculating that there will be a tie-up with BJP in future. Even I personally felt that you should have spoken strongly (against BJP). It might be probably because I suffered (because of BJP). But you should have targeted BJP some more, Daddy.”

She further noted that her father’s silence on several issues, including 42 per cent reservation for backward classes, Scheduled Castes categorisation, the Waqf Amendment Act, and the exclusion of Urdu from his address, had attracted negative feedback. Kavitha also expressed concern that some Telangana movement activists were not given a chance to speak or were not treated properly during the Warangal gathering.

At the same time, she acknowledged KCR’s strong position on “Operation Kagar” and appreciated his observance of a moment of silence for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. She concluded the letter by congratulating him on the overall success of the Silver Jubilee meeting.

The authenticity of the letter has not been verified, and neither Kavitha’s office nor that of KCR has issued a formal statement. Despite several hours having passed since the letter began circulating, the BRS has not issued a denial.

The letter also observed that some grassroots-level BRS members were beginning to see the BJP as a viable alternative to the current Congress government, which she claimed had lost public support. Kavitha noted that the party’s decision not to contest the recent MLC elections had sent a message to cadres that a political alignment with the BJP could be on the horizon.

“Everybody expected that you would give specific programmes or guidelines in order to address the political scenario. At least now we can hold a plenary for one or two days. Elicit as many opinions from cadres and give them a guideline,” she wrote, urging the former chief minister to respond to the evolving political situation.

Kavitha was also unavailable for comment as she is currently in the United States for her son’s graduation ceremony.

Responding to the controversy, BRS MLC Sravan Dasoju told news agency PTI that he was unsure if the letter had indeed been written by Kavitha. However, he dismissed claims that it suggested internal unrest within the party. “It is a very normal feedback given by a daughter to a father or by a leader to a supreme leader. It’s like (letter) consolidating and passing the feedback that she got from people,” he said.

Asked about reactions from the BJP and the Congress, who claimed the letter reflected rifts within the BRS, Dasoju maintained that the public was more concerned about core governance issues such as paddy procurement and unemployment.
