Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently opened up about a difficult phase early in his acting journey when his father asked him not to return home because he was tired of watching his son get beaten up on screen. The actor shared the story during a conversation with Raj Shamani on his podcast, reflecting on how those early roles shaped both his career and personal life.

Speaking about his early films, Nawazuddin recalled, “In the beginning, I was always getting beaten up in movies. In Sarfarosh, my first film, I was beaten. The same thing happened in Munna Bhai MBBS. I often played thieves or pickpockets — always on the receiving end. People from my village would tell my father, ‘Your son always gets beaten in films,’ and he would get very upset.”
He went on to explain that his father, who came from Western Uttar Pradesh, was a man of great pride. “He once asked me, ‘Why do you keep doing such roles?’ I told him, ‘I don’t get anything else; I’m trying.’ Then he said, ‘Stop coming home after getting beaten up.’ I was so hurt that I didn’t visit my village for three years,” the actor revealed.
How Gangs of Wasseypur Brought Acceptance
Things changed after Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, which became a turning point in Nawazuddin’s career. The film not only made him a household name but also earned him his father’s long-awaited approval. “After the film, I went back to my village and asked my father, ‘So, what do you think now?’ He smiled and said, ‘Yes, this time you did a good job,’” Nawazuddin recalled fondly.
The actor was last seen in Thamma, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna.
