In a recent interview, producer Ratan Jain made certain claims regarding the casting of Mansoor Khan’s Josh, in which Shah Rukh Khan played Max. He said that Aamir Khan was also interested in playing the role of Max, which created a conflict and SRK lost interest in the film and left what was supposed to be a joint narration. However, in an interview with us, Mansoor has debunked these claims.

Mansoor Khan on Ratan Jain’s claims regarding the casting of Josh, “I’m seriously concerned about Ratan ji’s mental health”
Producer Ratan Jain has revealed that Shah Rukh Khan was the original first choice for the role of Max in Josh, but the casting was changed due to a conflict with Aamir Khan
I respect and love Ratan ji and I found his remarks exceedingly cute. This is the first time that he’s said something that is total fantasy. Here is exactly what happened. I finished the screenplay and because Aamir was there in the office, you know, he’s more accessible, so I said, Aamir, I’ve written it, please let’s hear it. So, I narrated but not saying who’s going to play whom. And then the next few days, I noticed that Aamir is coming to me and he had the gloves in his hands like Max style, you know, he was dressed like Max.
Okay. He was thinking that he’s playing Max?
Then I went to Shah Rukh and narrated Josh to him.
The meeting with Shah Rukh and Aamir together never happened, right?
Never happened. Ratan ji claiming that I will not produce the film is completely untrue. Ratan ji was so gentle and he wanted Salman instead of Shah Rukh. Salman wasted six months of ours. But see, for me, Shah Rukh is Max. Of course, he owned the role. He owned the role completely. He has got the charisma, the style, the brashness, the body language, the attitude. But he’s likable, despite his so-called arrogance. He’s lovable. He loves his style. You know, and he feels like a gang leader. And that’s why when I came back after speaking to Shah Rukh, because Shah Rukh, after he heard the screenplay, said, ‘Yeah, in that scene, Max can do this Max should have this and that.’ So I said, oh, God, there Aamir is thinking he’s playing Max, here Shah Rukh is thinking he’s playing Max. Both of them liked the script.
Mansoor, Aamir was never interested in playing the other role, right? Chandrachur Singh’s role?
No, not at all. Not at all. He said, no, I won’t do it. He was right from his career point. He was completely right because he was changing his image from, you know, rosy cheek to a tougher avatar. Yeah, exactly. It would have been a challenge for him. But that was the thing that I told Aamir, ‘I want Shah Rukh as Max’. He said, no, then I’m not doing the film. He said, I’m trying to change my image here. I can’t go back to playing this lover boy and that too against Shah Rukh. So, I said, okay, fine.

What happened next?
And then Josh got dropped. Then I made Akele Hum Akele Tum.
Salman kept you waiting for six months for Josh?
Yeah, then for six months I waited. I think he wouldn’t do Josh because there was some punga of the past between Salman’s best friend Bunty Walia and me. Yeah, and while I was talking to Salman in his house, the door opened and it was Bunty Walia. He said, ‘Oh, sorry’ and closed the door. I already knew they were buddies. Ratan Jain had given Salman ten lakhs
To Salman as signing amount for Josh?
Yes. He gave him ten lakhs. And even Kajol said no, Aishwarya nailed it. But, you know, there’s that certain bindaasness about Kajol, which cannot be replaced by anyone. Shah Rukh and Kajol would have been really wild angels. Anyway, we can go on about this hypothetically forever. But the fact is…
Please go on?
I mean, I’m seriously concerned about Ratan ji’s mental health. No, you know, with the passage of time, people, when it comes to something as important as this, they tend to make up their own, not that he’s lying, their own mythology about it. I mean, one day I’ll casually ask Ratanji, when did this happen? You know, in a good mood, we’ll talk. But you never know, he might turn around and say, this is exactly how it happened. But I will not refute him. I won’t confront him. I’ll say, ‘Oh yes, Ratanji, I forgot’.
