US Vice President JD Vance’s remark about his Hindu wife’s faith was not the only controversy of the Turning Point USA campus event earlier this week. What also turned heads is the intimate hug between Vance and Erika Kirk, the widow of Trump aide Charlie Kirk, and her glowing words about seeing “Charlie in JD”. It has fuelled rampant speculation about the vice president’s personal life.
The incident happened as Erika made her first major public appearance since Charlie’s assassination in September. The right-wing activist and a close aide of Donald Trump was shot dead while speaking at a university event in Utah.
In an emotional speech, Erika talked about courage in the face of tragedy before introducing JD Vance.
“When our team asked my dear friend, JD Vance, to speak today, I really prayed on it, because obviously it’s a very emotional, emotional day,” she said.
It was her next sentence that raised eyebrows. “No one will ever replace my husband. But I do see some similarities of my husband in JD,” Erika said.
