Blow to Mahagathbandhan as another candidate’s nomination cancelled from Mohania

In another setback for the Opposition’s Mahagathbandhan (INDI Alliance) in Bihar, the nomination of RJD candidate Shweta Suman from the Mohania Assembly constituency has been cancelled.

The Election Commission rejected her nomination after it was found that she is a native of Uttar Pradesh, making her ineligible to contest from the seat.

This comes just a day after a major blow to the Opposition in East Champaran, where the Sugauli seat turned into a potential walkover for the NDA following the rejection of two key nominations from the Mahagathbandhan camp.

Shashi Bhushan Singh, the sitting RJD MLA from Sugauli, had filed his nomination as a candidate of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). However, his papers were rejected due to a technical oversight. Since VIP is not a registered regional party, Singh was required to have 10 proposers for his nomination but submitted only one, following RJD’s norms. The Election Commission found the papers deficient and disqualified his candidature.

Adding to the Opposition’s troubles, RJD rebel Om Prakash Chaudhary also had his nomination cancelled after scrutiny revealed that several pages in his nomination form were left blank, a clear sign of organisational lapses within the Mahagathbandhan.

The filing of nomination papers for the first phase of polling closed on October 17, while the last date for the second phase ended on Monday.

The 243-member Bihar Assembly will go to the polls in two phases on November 6 and November 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.
