The breakout saga is getting a fresh chapter. Hulu has officially greenlit a new ‘Prison Break’ series, one that reimagines the hit 2005 drama with a new cast, new story, and the same pulse-racing intensity that made the original a phenomenon.
The project, which has been in development for nearly two years, will be helmed by Mayans MC co-creator Elgin James, who serves as showrunner and director of the pilot. While set in the same universe as the original Fox series, this reboot introduces a completely new story centred on loyalty, sacrifice, and survival inside one of America’s most dangerous prisons.
Leading the cast is Emily Browning, who plays an ex-soldier turned corrections officer willing to risk everything for someone she loves. The ensemble also includes Drake Rodger, Lukas Gage, Clayton Cardenas, JR Bourne, Georgie Flores, and Myles Bullock.
According to the official logline, Browning’s character “takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves.” The premise marks a shift from the original — which followed a man’s daring mission to free his wrongly accused brother — while retaining the series’ signature tension and emotional core.
Produced by 20th Television, the reboot brings back original executive producers Paul Scheuring, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, promising a seamless connection to the world that fans know and love.
While the new ‘Prison Break’ won’t feature the original cast or characters, it aims to expand the universe with a modern edge and deeper character exploration. The original series, which ran for four seasons before returning in 2017 with a limited revival, continues to stream on Hulu and Netflix.
