In the eighth episode of The Filmy Hustle, hosted by distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Kim Sharma and Rajeev Masand of Dharma Cornerstone (DCA) raised important points about talent management, what goes behind the scenes and a lot more. We are living in times of entourages and it has often become a matter of huge discussion, especially after some filmmakers called out the practice and how it adds to the budget. Hence, Rajeev Masand sharing an anecdote about Ranbir Kapoor and his entourage-free approach is sure to grab attention.
Rajeev Masand of DCA explains why Ranbir Kapoor’s entourage-free lifestyle is a ‘masterstroke’: “He eats alone abroad to stay real; stands in immigration queues all by himself without his team”
Rajeev Masand revealed, “I was coming back from Melbourne and I was in the immigration queue. I turned around and I saw Ranbir standing there. He was returning from a shoot in Bangkok and he was standing alone. It’s not a sight that you usually see. I work in this business and I know that celebs are never alone. We started chatting and I asked him, ‘Where’s your team?’. He asked, ‘What team?’!”
He continued, “I know this sounds really strange to the common man. They might ask, ‘Don’t we all stand alone?’. But actors don’t, right? They have an army of people.”
Rajeev Masand continued, “He got out and he had someone outside waiting for him. But until then, he was alone and I think that’s who he is. I have heard from filmmakers that when they could call for a break during their shoots abroad, they’d find Ranbir eating in some café all by himself. I feel that’s the mark of an intelligent actor. It stems from his belief that ‘I need to be in touch with the real world to be able to play those characters and to be able to put some authenticity into those characters’. So, I think it’s a masterstroke.”
He also said, “All of this is interesting because he’s a great actor. If the same approach is done by a s**t actor, we won’t even be talking about it! To that actor, we’ll be like ‘Please be alone’!”
