Kriti Sanon recently walked home with a trophy at the recent Zee Cine Awards for her fun performance in the comedy heist drama Crew. While she expressed her excitement in the speech, it also ignited a long-overdue conversation about the place of comedy in mainstream awards recognition. The actor, who was honoured with the Best Actress award, used her acceptance speech to raise a pointed issue often brushed under the red carpet.
Kriti Sanon believes actors seldom receive nomination for ‘comic roles’ as she wins Best Actress; says, “I think it’s quite difficult to make others laugh”
“Thank you. This one’s really, really special,” Kriti began. “Mujhe genuinely aisa lagta hai ki kabhi kabhi comic roles unhe best actor–best actress category me nominate bhi nahin karte hai, normally (I genuinely think that normally, many times, they do not nominate actors-actresses in comic roles). And I’ve never understood why, you know, because I think bahut mushkil hota hai logo ko hasana, aisa mujhe lagta hai (I guess, what I think is that it is quite difficult to make others laugh). And thank you, Zee, for recognizing the effort.”
Her words struck a chord. In an industry that often leans towards rewarding dramatic intensity, Kriti’s win for a comedic performance raises an important question: why do comic roles continue to be seen as lighter, or less demanding, when in fact they require equally refined skill?
This recognition follows a strong run at the box office for Kriti. In the past year, she headlined three diverse films—Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, The Crew, and Do Patti—each of which pushed her into distinct territory, from science fiction to thriller to ensemble drama. Meanwhile, this is not the first of its kind appreciation that is coming Sanon’s way. She has previously earned praise for performances in Mimi and Bareilly Ki Barfi, and her win now draws attention to the need for a broader understanding of performance craft in the awards ecosystem.
Next up, the actor will reunite with director Aanand L Rai and co-star Dhanush for Tere Ishq Mein, a film believed to be set in the world of Raanjhanaa. With music by A.R. Rahman, the project is among her most anticipated, and it signals her continued interest in stories that span both heart and terrain.
