The recently concluded Filmfare Awards turned into an evening of nostalgia and candour as Bollywood superstars Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan shared the stage after years. While the moment was filled with light-hearted banter, Akshay’s comments during their exchange struck a chord within the film industry.
Akshay Kumar warns newcomers against 3-film deals, says Ba***ds of Bollywood shows what debutants should avoid
When Shah Rukh asked Akshay if there was any advice he’d like to share with aspiring actors, the latter responded with characteristic wit and wisdom. “I want to say just one thing to all the newcomers and the upcoming newcomers — never sign a 3-film deal with any producer,” Akshay remarked, drawing attention to a long-standing practice in Bollywood.
Referring to the recent streaming hit The Ba***ds of Bollywood, Akshay added, “You must have seen what our hero had to go through. The film makes it clear what a debutant should and should not do. Do not sign a 3-movie deal. Give your debutant freedom, allow them to run away. As it is said, ‘let them free, if they belong to you, they will come back’.”
Elaborating on his approach to work, the actor continued, “I always say money attracts money, and similarly, work attracts money. No work is big or small. It happens at times that I like the story of a film, but my role is small, yet I still do it because I know the movie is good and I want to be a part of history.”
Akshay’s statement resonates with real-life examples from the industry. Several newcomers in recent years have found themselves restricted by multi-film contracts that never fully materialised. The Ba***ds of Bollywood itself featured actors who had experienced similar setbacks — Lakshya, who signed a three-film deal with Dharma Productions following his debut Kill, saw his subsequent films Dostana 2 and Bedhadak shelved. Likewise, Anya Singh’s three-film contract with YRF after Qaidi Band failed to progress beyond her debut.
