Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan not letting go of his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron’s fingers during the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Albania has left social media commentators amused. Many wondered whether the finger-grabbing gesture was Erdogan’s subtle display of power play, even catching Macron off guard.

In the video, which has now gone viral, Erdogan is seen grabbing Macron’s hand and patting it. Things take a curious turn when an unsuspecting Macron extends his other hand to Erdogan. As Macron tries to free his hand, Erdogan — while exchanging a few words — holds on to the French President’s index finger.

The next 13 seconds appear uncomfortable for Macron as he stands there talking and trying to free his hand, with Erdogan silently holding his finger while seated, before eventually letting it go.

Since the video has gone viral, many have started speculating about Erdogan’s body language during the brief interaction captured in the footage.

According to a Turkish media outlet, Erdogan reacted in that manner as “Macron tried to establish psychological superiority by putting his hand” on the Turkish President’s shoulder.

“But Erdogan did not allow it, he held his finger tightly and did not let go,” the Turkish media outlet added.

The EPC summit saw the representation of leaders from 47 countries on Friday. The summit aimed to boost regional security ties and strengthen political stability across Europe. However, it will be remembered for several unique moments.
