Komal Nahta had a wonderful conversation with Karan Johar about the production aspects, star fees, entourage and a lot more. At one point, Karan Johar made an interesting observation about the stardom of superstar Salman Khan and how he effortlessly slipped into action roles.
Karan Johar reveals that opening figures of Garv were an EYE-OPENER: “Salman Khan was giving love stories to masses in 90s…he could have been a MASSIVE action movie star 10 years before Dabangg”
Karan Johar said, “Just like how you update your craft, you also need to update your sensibility. The sensibility you had in the 90s, woh iss daur mein nahin ho sakti. So, you need to update by being aware of your circumstances. You need to know what the contemporaries are making and why their films are working. It might not match your sensibility, but as a producer, it is my job to study it.”
He added, “90s was an era of romance. We found and discovered action much later. Action was always there in our grain. Salman Khan showed you about his grain of action when he got an opening for a film called Garv (2004). The film didn’t do big business, but it got an opening. But he himself saw (him being an action star) in Dabangg. When Dabangg ran in 2010, he realized it then, but Salman was always an action hero. But he had only given love stories to the masses. He also didn’t know. He could have been a massive action movie star 10 years before Dabangg. So, sometimes you discover things when the audience tells you.”
KJo further said, “Horror comedies and action are popular genres. But you can’t have a herd mentality. At the same time, you need to understand that the universe is changing. India ab Bharat ban gaya hai. It wants to experience rooted stories. They want to go back to their culture and mythology. In the 90s, there was globalization and hence our films were set in London and New York. Now, if you shoot in foreign lands, your film will only open in urban centres. It will not open in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Hence, updating your sensibility and reading a room are very important.”
