The Waterfront Indie Film Festival (WIFF) hosted an engaging ‘Round of Applause – Panel Discussion’ featuring Hansal Mehta, Tushar Hiranandani, Rohan Sippy, and Vishal Furia in Mumbai, where they discussed filmmaking challenges, amusing experiences, their journey in the OTT world, and more. Tushar Hiranandani surprised one and all with his candid confessions, which brought the house down.
Tushar Hiranandani recalls Twitter WAR with Akshay Kumar fans: “I was called ‘c******’; I was going crazy”; opens up on humiliating phone call from senior director after Saand Ki Aankh “opened at Rs. 20 lakhs”: “He said, ‘Beta tu Chandigarh mein ruk ja aur Punjabi picture bana’”
Tushar Hiranandani began by saying, “I worked on a film called Saand Ki Aankh (2019). I still remember; it was the first day of the film. Me and my wife Nidhi (Nidhi Parmar Hiranandani), who was also the producer on the film, ran away to Chandigarh. That’s our place. Once I landed, I switched on my phone. That’s when I got a call from a senior director. He asked where I was. I told him, ‘I am in Chandigarh’. He told me, ‘Beta, tu udhar hi ruk ja aur tu wahaan Punjabi picture bana’. This is because Saand Ki Aankh had opened at Rs. 20 lakhs. The same happened with my other film, Srikanth (2024). It opened at Rs. 1 crore. For me, it’s always been that. Friday never works for me. Saturday works for me a little. Monday starts working for me. That’s when I knew that my film was getting acclaimed, appreciated and watched.”
Saand Ki Aankh starred Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar and told the story of two women who started their careers as sharpshooting champions after the age of 60.
At another point, Tushar Hiranandani also said, “I was in Chandigarh. It’s the cheapest place to drink, right (smiles)? So, I started drinking in the afternoon. After all, my film had just collected Rs. 20 lakhs! Also, my film was released with Housefull 4. I was being trolled by Akshay Kumar fans. I was on Twitter; I had the blue tick and a verified account. The whole night, my wife pulled away the bottle from me (but I kept on drinking). I felt my career was over! I sat down and was fighting with each and every Akshay Kumar fan from Bihar to UP. Hansal sir is lucky. Trolls called him uncle. I was called ‘chu…’. I was going crazy.”
He continued, “The next day, I got up and that was the last day (for me on Twitter). I just gave up. I realized that it doesn’t matter.”
He told the host, “You just asked if we make films for critics or audiences. Well, I make films to make myself happy (smiles).” The statement received a round of applause.
