Actor-producer Nikhil Dwivedi has opened up about the intriguing title of his upcoming film Bandar (Monkey in a Cage), directed by Anurag Kashyap. Since its announcement, the film’s unusual name has sparked curiosity, and now Dwivedi has revealed how it came into being and why it eventually stuck.

“I suggested ‘Bandar’, and then I myself started having second thoughts about it,” Dwivedi confessed. “But Anurag and everybody else by then had started to love the title so much that they said this title.”
The metaphor of a ‘bandar’ (monkey) arose naturally while discussing the protagonist’s journey. Dwivedi explained, “When I was seeing the character’s journey, I kind of saw that usko har koi madari ki tarah idhar se udhar nacha raha tha (everyone was making him dance like a street monkey). A lot of times Anurag unknowingly said that the system is making him dance like a monkey. And one day he casually mentioned it, and I said, ‘Why don’t we keep the title as Bandar?’”
Helmed by Kashyap, Bandar is described as a gritty, emotional tale of a man caught in the web of societal manipulation and systemic exploitation. The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and has already generated significant buzz.
The cast features Bobby Deol in a strikingly new avatar, one that is expected to be among the most transformative and career-defining performances of his journey. Alongside him, Sanya Malhotra plays a pivotal role, earning praise for delivering a heart-rending portrayal. Saba Azad appears as a young, fierce woman with striking authenticity, while Sapna Pabbi’s role is being kept under wraps as a surprise for viewers.
Actor-producer Nikhil Dwivedi, who has previously backed acclaimed projects like Veere Di Wedding and CTRL, is producing the film. Bandar is written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee.
With its layered themes, powerful performances, and Kashyap’s trademark storytelling, Bandar is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films in recent times.
