Keith Urban dropped hints he and Nicole Kidman weren’t the perfect couple in a “snippy” interview last year.
The country singer allegedly became “guarded” as soon as his wife came up during a September 2024 sitdown with The Times, reporter Ed Potton recalled Tuesday.
“I just don’t want to give you guys a headline about my wife,” the Grammy winner, 57, said while discussing his addiction battle and the intervention Kidman, 58, staged shortly after their 2009 wedding.
“Before you know it the interview would be: ‘My wife saved my life,’” Urban explained at the time. “And I don’t want to go there.”
Later in the conversation, the songwriter briefly admitted “coming from the same place [was] very helpful” in their relationship.
“I think being in different fields was also equally helpful,” he added.
However, Urban shut the journalist down again when Potton asked whether he felt proud of his Oscar-winning partner’s career.
“Very,” Urban said, before noting, “We’ve had the best conversation about my career and my music, and I love that at the very end of this conversation you’re going to give one more swing to see if I’ll talk about my wife.
“I’m not going to talk about her,” Urban insisted.
Urban’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
One year passed before news broke on Monday that the couple had called it quits after 19 years of marriage.
A source told Page Six the duo separated early this summer and began living apart.
We hear the “Big Little Lies” star, who filed for divorce Tuesday, is “sad, but moving on.”
While she and Urban have yet to make public statements regarding their bombshell breakup, Kidman was spotted hiking in Nashville, Tenn., with her sister, Antonia Kidman, on Wednesday.
Urban, meanwhile, is at the center of rumors swirling “all over Nashville” that he “is with another woman.”
A video has since gone viral showing Urban changing a Kidman-inspired lyric in “The Fighter” to honor his utility player, Maggie Baugh, during a June performance.
Additionally, Urban’s Sept. 2 interview on Australia’s Gold 101.7’s “Jonesy & Amanda” radio show recently resurfaced on social media.
The “Stupid Boy” singer appeared “visibly uncomfortable” when asked about his and Kidman’s love story, dodging the questions while removing his jacket.
He awkwardly ended the avenue of conversation by quipping, “Moving on.”
