Are you inching towards direction?
Sir, you never know! Of course, I want to direct a film. Isn’t that what every filmmaker aspires to do? I’ve produced films like PadMan, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Rustom, and now Jatadhara. I’ve had the privilege to observe some of our finest actors and directors at work.
If and when you do turn director, who is the one actor you would like to direct?
Sir, you know who I would give my right hand to work with? Asha Parekh! I’ve been a huge, huge fan of Ashaji all my life. I’ve seen all her films over and over again, especially Caravan, Mere Sanam, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, Pyar Ka Mausam, Do Badan, Chirag, Kati Patang, Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki… The list is endless. I love every one of her films, and when I direct a movie, I’d like Ashaji to be in it.
But she has retired long ago?
I will persuade her to return. October 2nd is her birthday, and I want to wish her immortality. That’s what she is to me… timeless. Not to undermine the other screen greats, but to me she is the ultimate dancer-actress. I look at her as my role model.
Coming back to the song Dhana Pisaachi—it is shot in striking shades of red and orange. Are you influenced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
Which filmmaker is not influenced by him? I am a huge fan of Bhansali Sir. He got the best out of Sonakshi Sinha Ma’am in Heeramandi. I would like to believe that our Jatadhara will also bring out the best in her. She has so much untapped talent.
On Dussehra, what is your thought for the women of our country?
Nari Shakti Zindabad! Every woman should recognize her inner strength and tap into it. It is a shame that in this day and age, when women are conquering the world, we still have gang rapes and dowry deaths. Every parent should teach their daughters the art of self-defence. Karate, pepper spray, and an alert law enforcement system should ensure that.
