Actor Leonardo DiCaprio honoured the legacy of legendary primatologist Jane Goodall, died on Wednesday at the age of 91. Known for her pioneering chimpanzee field research and tireless environmental advocacy, Goodall left an indelible mark on conservation efforts worldwide. DiCaprio, a longtime admirer and friend, shared an emotional tribute along with photos of their moments together on social media.
“Today we have lost a true hero for the planet, an inspiration to millions, and a dear friend,” the Oscar winner wrote. “Jane Goodall devoted her life to protecting our planet and giving a voice to the wild animals and the ecosystems they inhabit. Her groundbreaking research on Chimpanzees in Tanzania transformed our understanding of how our closest relatives live, socialise, and think – reminding us that we are deeply connected not only to Chimpanzees and the other great apes, but to all life,” the actor continued.
Reflecting further, DiCaprio added, “For decades, Jane travelled the world with tireless energy, awakening generations to the wonder of the natural world. She spoke directly to the next generation, instilling hope, responsibility, and the belief that every individual can make a difference. She inspired millions to care, to act, and to hope. She never stopped.”
Over the years, DiCaprio and Goodall forged a close bond through their shared commitment to conservation. In 2019, he attended her 85th birthday celebration in Los Angeles – a day officially proclaimed as “Dr. Jane Goodall Day” in honour of her work. Both also served as United Nations Messengers of Peace and collaborated on the 2024 environmental film ‘Howl’.
