The NBA star’s ex-wife courageously reflected on the heartbreaking details of her childhood trauma and how the s**ual abuse she endured broke her to her core.
Speaking openly about the s**ual abuse and the trauma of it, Laura revealed how painful the memories of the same are and how they still haunt her to this very day. She also shared how, despite seeking therapy, the scars from her past still linger, shaping her experiences and relationships. During the podcast, she reflected on the details and how it all affected her relationship with Gilbert Arenas.
Laura Govan reflects on the painful reality of childhood abuse
During the podcast, Laura Govan recalled that her abuse began after she got into a serious car accident that left her bedridden. The TV personality’s injuries were extensive, and she had broken her hip, which left her confined to her bed for a year. However, during this time, something happened that changed her life forever.
Laura Govan further shared that during the time when she was injured, bedridden and exposed, her stepbrother would come into her room and assault her. She shared how the memories of the same still come back to haunt her, making her feel like she will never be able to heal from the wounds that were caused by her supposed family. She was quoted as saying:
“When I say trauma, I was molested, raped by my stepbrother. I didn’t say anything until I was 13. I couldn’t walk. I walked with a really hard limp growing up. To this day, I don’t like seeing the crack of light in the door because I see footsteps…I had to learn to deal with that, and I am still dealing with it at 45.”
Laura Govan recalls how her father’s response made her livid
In the same conversation, Laura Govan revealed that for the longest time, she had been unable to say anything. However, she found her voice through basketball. Laura eventually confided in her father about the abuse she had suffered. However, his lack of response left her feeling betrayed and deeply angry. “That was my therapy for a long, long time”, Laura explained, referring to the way she channelled her anger into the sport.

Despite seeking therapy in her early 30s, Laura Govan admitted that she is still not completely healed. The TV personality shared that trauma is still a very present part of her life, and even today, she is wrestling with the emotional scars it left behind. She explained that she feels these scars more than she sees her own children. She acknowledged that her journey is still ongoing. However, she might never truly heal from what happened. She was quoted as saying:
“No. That’s a scar that I feel, and I feel it more when I see my daughters and sons.”
