Laura Govan recently discussed her relationship with the three-time NBA All-Star, Gilbert Arenas. The TV personality has been through more than most can imagine. From being sexually assaulted as a child to almost losing her own child, time has truly tested her at every phase of life. Even in her marital life, she couldn’t find the peace she craved, and in a conversation with Dr Holly Carter on DHC, she discussed the same.
Laura Govan reflects on how she and Gilbert Arenas’ eldest son’s near-fatal accident helped them patch things
It was in April 2025 that Gilbert Arenas and Laura Govan’s son, Alijah Arenas, was placed in a medically induced coma after getting into a life-threatening car crash. For the unversed, the 18-year-old had lost control of his Tesla and crashed into a tree. The crash set the car ablaze. However, before more damage could have been done, bystanders rescued him.
Speaking about the same during the show, Laura revealed that it was this tragic instance that shook them as a family. However, as their son recovered, the incident forced them to reflect and call for a truce between her and Gilbert. She was quoted as saying:
“Alijah, our son, had an accident, and it was a really bad space, a really deadly situation. We came together in the midst of that, and it’s been great since.”
Laura Govan wanted to kill Gilbert Arenas
In the same conversation, Laura Govan revealed that she had some strong feelings toward Gilbert Arenas before Alijah’s accident. She took the opportunity to lighten the mood and joked that she was “going to kill him.” She shared that she knew he loved her and stated:
“I know he loves me. I told him I love him. It took my son being in a deathly state for us to come together, and I will take it. Cause Gilbert Arenas, I was going to kill him because he was killing me.”

In the same conversation, Laura Govan revealed that the breaking point in their relationship came when she found out that Gilbert Arenas was having an affair. Reflecting on their relationship, Laura revealed that she didn’t want her daughters to marry a man like him or her son to be a man like him. Recalling the events that led to their separation, Laura shared that she had discovered Gilbert was offering money to a woman and was having a full-blown relationship, while she remained unaware.
Laura Govan explained that Gilbert Arenas’ affair drew her away from the dynamic. She said she left after coming face-to-face with the woman her husband was having an affair with. She was quoted as saying:
“It got to the point where I wouldn’t even step into the house. He invited me somewhere and I said, ‘No, that’s enough.’ And I was done. I didn’t know who she was. I used to see her in the store; she used to talk to me! When I saw her, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m done.”
