Salehe Bembury and Puma have delivered a quick one, two punch. Just a few days after the launch of the Hali 1, Tyrese Haliburton’s signature shoe designed by Bembury, the blockbuster designer has released another original model for Puma.
The Salehe Bembury x Puma Velum 1 is now available to purchase in two colorways: “Mahana” and “Yams.” Appearing primarily in blue and green, the former colorway went up for sale in June at Paris Fashion Week, but only 100 pairs were made available to purchase. For its wider launch, the sneaker is now joined by a counterpart with an orange, brown and yellow upper befitting of the “Yams” name.
Just like the Hali 1, as well as a good part of Puma’s basketball and running slate, the Velum 1 boasts Nitro cushioning. It’s molded into the shape of Bembury’s signature fingerprint motif at the heel, also closely aligning with the Hali 1, and gives way to more sweeping lines as the foam progresses from the midfoot to forefoot. A recycled mesh upper carries no-sew overlays with geometric shapes and a Formstrip that looks like it’s been preserved as a fossil.
Branding for Bembury also takes several placements throughout the shoe, something that was intentionally withheld from the Hali 1, as the designer told Footwear News he wanted it to be clear it was a shoe he made for Haliburton rather than a Bembury shoe.
The Salehe Bembury x Puma Velum 1 “Mahana” and “Yams” can be bought now on Bembury’s Be a Spunge website. Kith will also release the sneakers Oct. 7, and pricing is set at $160.
