MILAN — Loro Piana seems to be Team Europe’s luxury charm.

The brand collaborated once again with Team Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup, golf’s most prestigious team contest, which took place at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., Sept. 23 to 28 and which Europe won.

It was the first time the away team had won since 2012, with Europe beating the U.S. team, which was outfitted by Ralph Lauren, by 15 to 13. Team Europe won the last Ryder Cup in Rome in 2023.

Loro Piana first designed the official uniforms for Team Europe and the Ryder Cup in 2016 and, celebrating this relationship, the Italian luxury brand has unveiled a Golf Capsule for men and women. The capsule includes high-performing pieces, all with pure, simple lines: trousers, Bermuda shorts and skirts in Techno Wool Bistretch Rain, the Carry quilted vest in wool bouclé, the Kyne hooded parka and the reversible Loro Piana Bomber in the trademarked Wind Stretch Storm System with stripes on cotton lining in a palette ranging from white, beige and navy to kummel, the brand’s signature color. Vests and V-neck sweaters, as well as polo shirts, are available in extra long staple cotton and Sea Island cotton.

The capsule is completed by a selection of accessories, from a baseball hat to leather gloves, silk printed scarves and a golf bag set.

On-site at the golf course, the Loro Piana lounge overlooked both the first and 18th holes for tee-off viewing. The suite display featured each day’s replica uniform colorways for Team Europe for both women and men — complete with accessories such as shoes and belts. Meanwhile, on the Saturday night of the competition, the brand threw a dinner at the Frick Museum that drew the likes of Jeremy Strong, Lauren Remington Platt, designer Misha Kahn, creative director Alex Riviere-Sieber, Italian diplomat Fabrizio Di Michele, and more.

Loro Piana created the attire that Team Europe athletes and their entourages wore during all official events, both on and off the course. Luke Donald, captain of Team Europe, contributed to the design and development process. The key pieces include the short-sleeved Eagle polo and the knitted V-neck vest crafted from the trademarked high-finesse Wishwool. The polo was crafted from an innovative stretch fabric that was exclusively treated to ensure excellent breathability, quick drying and comfort.

Additionally, the fibers were treated with silver, which provided anti-odor properties. The tops were worn over the Lawrie trousers, an interpretation of classic Loro Piana flat-front trousers made from Techno Wool Bistretch Rain.

Here, Donald provides additional details about the qualities necessary to make the cut.

WWD: Given the longstanding relationship between Loro Piana and the Ryder Cup, how did you envision the uniforms compared to the past?

Luke Donald: Loro Piana has been the official clothing supplier to Team Europe since 2016, and in that time they have developed a classic and identifiable look for us. It has evolved over the years, but a signature look has remained, which is something we wanted to continue. A good uniform can be an underrated part of playing in a team — it plays a big part in creating a sense of common identity. Europe is a large and diverse place, so creating a visual identity that can represent an entire continent is no mean feat, but Loro Piana have done that well for the past four Ryder Cups (plus this year’s edition).

WWD: What are the main assets of the fabrics and the silhouettes?

L.D.: The clothing for the three match days included polos made from an innovative stretch fabric, and a knitted V-neck vest crafted from high-finesse Wish wool. The tops were worn over trousers, which were made from a wool that has been treated to be waterproof and has some stretch to it. All of the items were breathable and offered a good range of movement, which is important when playing golf. Loro Piana’s attire also has a well-tailored silhouette which is classically European in style.

WWD: What are the requirements for the best performance?

L.D.: For me, comfort is essential when playing golf. You need to make sure you wear clothing that does not hinder a full range of movement, especially when it’s raining, and Loro Piana have used 3D technology to simulate the clothing’s reaction during the swing to make sure it performed as we needed it to. Confidence is also so important in golf, particularly at the professional level, and I do think that if you feel confident in how you look, then this can go some way to helping your performance.

WWD: In terms of color?

L.D.: On match days, the team wore sky blue on Friday, kummel on Saturday and white, accented by the colors of the European flag, on Sunday. The team also had special uniforms for the practice days.

WWD: How was your experience working on the designs with Loro Piana?

L.D.: The team at Loro Piana have always been very easy to work with. They’re collaborative, want to hear my feedback, and I know the whole team has always been very happy with the clothing worn — both on and off the course. I’ve been lucky to have seen the designs from an early stage and provided my input, and I’m really happy with how the team looked both on and off the course. I come from a strong artistic background and I even studied art as a major at college. I think having an interest in art and fashion goes hand-in-hand in many ways, so I’ve always taken a keen interest in the uniforms. I’ve also been lucky to have had some of the best fashion brands as personal sponsors over the years, with their talented teams helping me understand the latest trends.
