Natasha Bharadwaj is best known for her roles in Mumbai Diaries 26/11 and Ishq Next Door and for her winning the reality show, India’s Next Superstars, in 2018. She was also a finalist in Miss Diva 2016, winning the title of Yamaha Fascino Miss Talented. Natasha also made her acting debut in the web series, Pawan & Pooja, in 2020 and also featured in King’s music video, ‘Maan Meri Jaan’.
Natasha Bharadwaj on starring in Badshah’s latest video, ‘Kokaina’: “Badshah knows his music and how to hook the audience in 3 minutes”
Her latest is ‘Kokaina’, a music video with Badshah, which has released on September 23. “I had super fun shooting it. We had a two-day shoot aur maine bahut zyaada mehnat ki hai!” she said. Her 22 years of background in Bharatanatyam along with the regular riyaaz helped, she said. “Because of my classical training, I can mould into any other dance style. Your adaptability improves after this and learning the moves was easy. I was rehearsing for four to five hours each day and the choreography was flawless.”
When Badshah sent her the track, Natasha was thrilled. “I was like, when do we start? In a few hours, I was at the studio to rehearse. The song has a chilled vibe and everything was super professional. Badshah was really chilled- out on set, his energy amazing, and he knows his music and how to hook the audience in 3 minutes. He has that quality and understands the grammar!”
She raved about singer Simiran Kaur as well. “Her voice is so powerful and its feel and texture are actually very, very different. She has given an amazing, beautiful spin to the song, and directors Piyush and Shazia have been superb.”
As someone trained in Indian classical dance, how does she look at the prevalent forms today? “I think there is nothing right or wrong in art. It’s our choice what to watch, which is why trailers and synopsis are there for films and music. It’s all about creative expression,” she declared.
The true high came when Natasha won her first award (the STARmeter Breakout Award from IMDb.com). When they called her, she first thought that it someone playing a prank. “As I was walking up the stage, it was as if all my years of hard work had finally paid off!” She later went on to win the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress – Drama (OTT) for Mumbai Diaries 26/11. “I won amidst the league of a Shabana Azmi and a Rasika Duggal,” she reminisced.
But why has Natasha’s filmography has been extremely sparse? “I now have two big-screen assignments coming up, though right now I have been told not to speak about them. But I am looking for more opportunities as acting assignments,” she said.
She must be having a wish-list of directors, right? “Oh, yes, and that is so long that I will send you a soft copy! Please reach out to them for me!” We insist on a few names and Natasha mentions Vishal Bhardwaj, who is “amazing” (her favourite adjective), Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his “magic” and Rajkumar Hirani as “one of the brilliant directors of our times.”
