Shawesh specifically responded to Netanyahu’s statement at the UN General Assembly, where the Israeli Prime Minister stated that Israel “must finish the job” in Gaza. Shawesh said, “The Palestine issue should be tackled with a ‘rational perspective’, Palestinian Ambassador to India Abdullah Abu Shawesh said on Sunday and termed as ‘dangerous’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement at the UN General Assembly hat Israel ‘must finish the job’ in Gaza.” His comments reflect ongoing concerns over the language used at international forums regarding the conflict.

During the event, Shawesh highlighted the position of the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. He stated, “Anyone who wants to tackle the Palestinian issue should tackle it from a rational perspective. This is exactly what the United Nations Secretary General, His Excellency, Antonio Guterres, said in his speech on October 24, 2023, when he denounced and condemned the Hamas attack…,” Shawesh said. The ambassador underlined that Guterres had condemned violence and advocated for reasoned engagement on the matter.

The discussion, titled “Genocide and Gaza’s Disabled,” was organised by the National Platform for the Rights of Disabled. The event aimed to draw attention to the consequences of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, particularly for people with disabilities. Shawesh’s remarks were directed at encouraging a more thoughtful and less inflammatory discourse on the issue.

Shawesh’s appeal for rationality in approaching the Palestinian issue comes amid heightened international focus on the situation in Gaza. By referencing both the United Nations’ position and recent statements made at the UN General Assembly, Shawesh stressed the risks associated with escalatory rhetoric and urged for balanced dialogue among global stakeholders.
